How A Printed Circuit Board Manufacturer Reduced Energy Costs By 26.8% with Onics

Energy Savings at a Plastic Circuit Board Manufacturer with Onics Passive Harmonic Filters

Problem

A printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturer in Anaheim, California was facing reduced equipment reliability and increased energy costs due to significant harmonic distortion on neutral and ground.

The non-power harmonics led to lower power quality from the utility, higher peak currents, and considerable energy losses from neutral and ground parasitic loads.

In addition, the heat caused by neutral and ground harmonics negatively impacted the performance and life expectancy of critical manufacturing equipment.

Solution

The manufacturer worked with Onics Energy Solutions to mitigate the harmful effects of harmonics with the Onics OES-11 Passive Neutral and Ground Harmonic Filter. Onics first engaged a certified, 3rd party Measurement and Verification (M&V) Energy Expert to establish an energy consumption baseline measured in kWh. The Onics team then installed OES-11 devices on every wye-connected panel and ground application throughout the facility.

After a reporting period of more than 120 days, the M&V Energy Expert analyzed utility interval metering data and production data to calculate the energy savings resulting from the installation of Onics OES-11 Passive Harmonic Filters.

The energy savings data and calculations were additionally audited and verified by Anaheim Public Utility and a third-party data science company.

Result

The facility experienced a verified energy savings of 26.8% kWh reduction and applied for an energy incentive rebate from Anaheim Public Utilities. The energy savings data was re-calculated and confirmed by two independent data scientists, and Summit Interconnect was awarded an energy incentive rebate of $51,235 by Anaheim Public Utilities.
